Gran Turismo designer Yamauchi wants to make an RPG

Head of Polyphony Digital also says Sony franchise may have to hit PC for Chinese market

Kazunori Yamauchi, the head of Sony's Polyphony Digital - responsible for the Gran Turismo series - has said that the franchise, a long-time PlayStation exclusive may debut on PC to attract Chinese gamers.

Speaking to German site derStandard he said: “It is very, very improbable that GT will comes out on another consoles.

“But perhaps it comes to the PC. Particularly [for] the Chinese market."

In the interview, he also explained that new game GT5 - the Prologue demo-style version of which is currently the UK's bestselling game - had been in the works by 150 people for four years and has cost 50 times more to make than the original GT1 on the PlayStation.

"A model required 180 days," Yamauchi said of the game's intesive asset generation. "For comparison: For a car in GT2 needed only one day."

He also added that it would be his "dream" to take a break from making games about cars and develop an RPG "with a similar high quality as GT" - however it remains a more distant possiblity, he added as all 120 of Polyphony's employees are tied up making GT5, the final version of which might not be out until after 2009, he confessed.

An RPG with the same obsessive attention to detail as GT could be something special :) (As long as the AI 'leaves the racing line' a bit more ;)

An RPG with the attention of GT might be an absolute classic
up there with Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI

"A model required 180 days,"

Yeah, sure it did... yet strangely, there are artists churning out better vehicles in a sixth of the time, on their own.

Makes you wonder what 150 people have been doing for 4 years, they certainly haven't been developing a "real driving simulator".. 'cos GT5P ain't one of those, that's for sure.

Most models probably don't take that long LeeC. What do you consider to be a real driving simulator?

I grow tired of the countless criticisms and comparisons between Forza 2 and Prologue, no, GT isn't uber-realistic, but if it were I figure people would bitch about that too. If you have such a problem with the game and it's false claims of "realism" make your own, if not, don't criticize what you yourself can't improve upon.

Wow! 180 days. What are they putting into those models? I can imagine, the engine sounds, suspension modelling and the scuplting of the body work all adds up, but 180 days?

As for an RPG, isn't GT already one? I've spent endless days 'grinding' to 'level up' my cars... All that's missing is an epic storyline!

Releasing on PC? Surely SCE would rather push the PS3 in China rather than make PC versions of games. Aren't Polyphony Digital Sony-owned which totally precludes making versions on other consoles, not just "very improbable"...

#3 and #6
It's not about jumping in 3D max and creating a good looking (non usable/functional) model from some blueprints,

they are creating models that looks, drives, sounds and functions like them from real life-
they have to do much more research the more realistic it have to be, gt2 was not that realistic at all.
Then the more complexity you get the more testing you have to do. To deliver consistent quality with this attention to detail of each model is what takes time,

There is only one thing that i never liked about this game, is the horrible tire screech, and menu sounds... I just turn them off, but it could be nice to see some improovements in this area!

and what about GT RPG?
make a racing rpg on the WoW level. where people can develop skills, develop hardware to create and tune carparts for themselves and others, and collect some of the uniqe cars from reallife.. this might be a very addicting game :P

Okay, they have to figure out how many polygons can PS3 render at once. How many of 'em should be reserved for the track and how many should a car has. Say, each car should have about 10,000 polygons (for example, I wouldn't know how many). Just for the model along, the modeller would have to try to make the most realistic out of those 10,000 polygons. So, it's easy to model a car and make it as pretty and detailed as you want, but it's not given limitations like this. Plus they also have to model deformation (if GT5 has it), then interior (which is often left out by many 3Ds Max modellers). many other things to consider. It's not an easy job.

in all likelihood, the developers do not wish to appeal to a puny minority of backwater bogans, especially considering the imminent demise of the Conformmodore and possibly the Holden brand (one can only hope).
however, there is a possibility they open it up to further expansion by determined, bored users to create their own vehicles, (as ugly as they desire). I would welcome that, along with user designed tracks, which would add enormously to the playability over long periods.

You clowns know nothing about motor racing. Before you try and develop another game watch Aussie 8V supercars. Penalising someone for getting 2 wheels on grass what a load of sick. Have raced both real cars and bikes as well as building engines for 30 years and this is the worst game you guys have made yet. Loved all up to GT4 and finish all without using one cheat. Been trying to finish S10 for three months You may know about games but you know nothing about REAL CARS. Prove me wrong because I feel ripped off.
