Xbox 360 motion sensing controller confirmed?

Wii competitor codenamed 'Newton' claims website

The Xbox 360 motion-sensing controller reported previously is real, says 8BitJoystick, and will see a release before the end of the year.

According to what the site calls 'internal sources at Microsoft', the tech will be remarkably similar to the Wii's, with a sensor bar, accelerometer, gyroscopic sensor, rumble motors, wireless two-way communication with the 360 and a microphone voice Xbox Live and voice-controlled games.

Microsoft is also rumoured to have licenced patents from Gyration, a company that was hired by Nintendo to create a prototype of the Wii controller in 2001. It also licences the same patents for its current hardware.

I actually had some respect for Microsoft for not shamelessly stealing Nintendo's idea as soon as it was announced, the way Sony did. However the Wii-mote / Nunchuck combo has proven so flexible and fun to use, I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes the standard for the next generation of consoles.

I don't think it will. There is still loads of people who do not like the idea of Wii-mote. It is great but not for everyone and it's not suitable for all type of games.

I will stick to my PADs but it would be a nice addition for Wii fans to be able to use similar controler with their 360 I guess.

If you go back through comments Peter Moore said before he jumped ship to EA, he pretty much admited that Microsoft was respectfully going to follow suit. At least they'll have admitted defeat - and have licensed the same technology - rather than going the Sony arrogant approach and showhorning two different input mechanisms together. It'll sure be interesting to see things like Gears of War 2 be 'Xbox Wand' launch games, and for games like Halo be (I presume) retro-patched to work with them.

They mention there the voice communication, maybe its a headset controller rather than just a wiimote? A bit like how Johnny Chung Lee demonstrated.

That could be pretty cool.

It would be nice if devs of RTS games already released such as BFME II and Universe at War provide updates/patches to make them compatible. An RTS with a mouse is much easier to play, methinks.

Some of you people are fools.Sony did not steal anything from Nintendo. The Sixasis motion censor isn't even marketed nor is it made use of for an entire game since it's not a gimmick like the Wii-mote.maybe if you people actually played the PS3 before you talk out of your neck you would realize the difference. As for this Xbox controller,if it happens it will fail. The Wii is a casual console with casual support. The XBox fan base is composed of FPS geeks who would never touch the thing.

I hope someone blows up every last bit of tech microsoft has that has to do with this stolen idea. as i always say, stick to your own strengths, don't go relying on other peoples ideas to make yours sound better. because that is just not cool, its the opposite! its just plain shallow!!

Hahahaha!
EVERYTHING Microsoft makes is a blatant rip off. Windows, and hell, even the Xbox are all just the company copying others' ideas and making it their own. If you read about the history of Microsoft, you'll find they spend millions taking other people's ideas and marketing it as their own.
I'll be interested to see how they go around marketing this thing without seeming like a$$holes.

Who cares if it is a rip off? There are some very short sighted people making comments here. As long as it is done well I don't see the problem. Did people criticise other new platforms for bringing out control pads instead of joysticks? It's great that Nintendo have led the way on this but we should encourage others to follow. To the future!
