Java game specialist opens new portal community
Cambridge-based developer Jagex has launched FunOrb, its new web game portal.
The site features a wide range of games based on the company's own Java gaming technology, as well as the obligatory social experience encompassing lobbies, league tables, achievements and instant messaging. The website can be accessed free-of-charge, although extra features such as additional game levels and achievements are only available to subscribers.
“For the first time, there is a generation of experienced gamers, turned young professionals, who want to play and be challenged, but are unable to devote large amounts of free time to gaming. FunOrb addresses this niche by blending quality entertainment with social functionality, offering players of all levels a complete social gaming experience,” said Geoff Iddison, Jagex's CEO.
It's nice looking, sure, but I don't know quite how well the site can fare when there's things like Kongregate giving away a huge amount of content for free.
Also, does anyone wonder if their proclaimed 'two week turnaround' for new games and features will really be feasible? if so, these guys should bottle whatever mojo they're working on.
