Jeff Minter disappointed by poor Space Giraffe sales

Space Giraffe outsold by Frogger; famed indie "not seeing a lot of reason to continue" developing games

Although Xbox Live Arcade is often touted as a great way for independent developers to make money, it seems Jeff Minter has been discouraged following poor performance of his first game for the service.

In a post on his LiveJournal, the famed indie designer has said he's "not seeing a lot of reason to continue even trying to make games, at this point, when a remake of Frogger, one of the worst games in the history of old arcade games, can outsell Space Giraffe that we put so much love and effort into, by more than ten to one, in one week".

He added: "OK, we get the message. All you want on that channel is remakes of old, shite arcade games and crap you vaguely remember playing on your Amiga. We'll shut up trying to do anything new then. Sorry for even trying."

The game was released earlier this year.

Maybe he's finally getting the message. His games are ****e. Even the famed Tempest 2000 wasn't all it's cracked up to be.

Maybe if he did anything other than re-hashed tempest variants there might be more interest?

All I want is remakes of old games? That's why no one bought Space Giraffe? No, Jeff, no one bought it because it was a load of rubbish. Please don't assume that just because no one bought your game, we all must have poor taste. That's not the reason at all.

Space Giraffe is garish, unfunny and repetitive. That's why I'd certainly prefer Frogger over it, and I don't even like frogger.

I met him at GDC 07 in San Francisco, and his game gave me a migraine. Not sure why he is so famous. There are so many other talented indies out there that never get their moment in the spotlight.

Maybe Jeff should try writing a game that does not look like anybody else's game, and does not involve shooting.

Maybe then he would pull himself out of the 1980s....

Xbox Live Arcade - Ah yes, that melting pot of original ideas. Jeff's game is a lot less an offender when it comes to plagurising old **** than most of the pathetic offerings on that service and at least he had the balls to put it out at the lowest price-point. This article has no real merit as it merely prints the contents of his LJ and adds little. Why? They guy's feeling a bit down at the moment and you're just drawing attention to something he's written while he's going through a bit of a crisis. Bit low init?

Jeff produces tempest clones time and time again. Space giraffe was so bloody psychadelic that it was bordering on unplayable.

The reason his game bombed was that it was c**p plain and simpy. No-one to blame except himself. Certainly no reflection on people wanting to wile away some time on an instantly pick up and play game like oh I don't know say frogger...

Jeff Minter has produced many classic games in the past. I remember playing games of superb originality (from the superb Iridis Alpha to Gridrunner++) and some of my favourite memories are of messing with his Light synths. Long live programmers with such dedication and artistry. He will be remembered long after the latest batch of XBox and Wii games have died....and he has done all for fun.

He has made some good games and had very original stuff - I realy liked LLammatron but he seems to just taylor for the aging hippy banging out the same thing that just relies on "trippy" GRFX and realy he should just make games for all people not clapped out acid throwbacks. - infact Jeff - you were always ment to make visulizations not games - you followed Atari - and went down with it - (N.B. I only just got rid of my STE about 2yrs ago)! - you should get out of the XBOX and console crap and get your A55 on the PC - make a kick ass visulization for winamp - this would show your strngths off well.. And if you do make it to the PC you will find more GRFX power than you can throw a stick at - no limmits!
