Runescape developer reveals plans for new titles for audiences around the world
In an interview with the BBC, the newly installed CEO of Runescape developer Jagex has confirmed the firm plans to introduce new games in 2008.
Former PayPal boss Geoff Iddison joined the Cambridge, UK firm last month, with plans to expand the business further.
Jagex launched Runescape in 2001, and the long-running online game mixes adventuring, combat and chat via a simple browser-based interface. The game has a number of younger players and has big audiences in the UK and other European countries where localised versions are available. It has a total player base of nine million, which has year on year growth of 35 per cent - although only a fraction pay a subscription. The rest take advantage of the free to play version.
Now, however, Iddison plans to help the firm introduce 'a couple' of new titles next year - although details are under wraps, they will be built on the same Java and browser tech as Runescape.
"These are interesting times for Jagex," said Iddison, calling the company's success - it employs 400 people, making it one of Europe's biggest game studios - "a well kept secret" in the industry.
y would u take away the wild ofver half the pple are quting runescape becuse of that update we want back
Well jagex i'm one of your longest rs player. I mainly make account for player-killing, now u taken that away , Good bye jagex, you are so going out of business...Make it back and your business will stay the same. Adios.
whyy!!!!!!
Well, they will remove all bots and scammers and all real world trading -- you lift that weight
Jagex's main game - Runescape will lose a huge amount of it'splayer base due to a series of updates which have severely reduced the quality of the game. I expect the amount of subscribers to severely drop within the next six monthhs.
The game is simply beyond salvage after January of the new year when yet another degrading update (trade restiction between players, 3000gold max in comparison to what Jagex says the price is) - Goodbye to a free Runescape Economy.
The JOker,
only people who got upset were bulies scammers and cheats, almost no one quit the game, as normal bullies shout loudest when they get caught.
Oh dear...
If things were looking so sunny in Runescape, do you realy think Jagex would be working on another release. I have been a loyal customer for three years, and to be quite frank, Jagex have gone an update to far.....
I feel Jagex sales figures could well reflect the fact that many of the loyal paying customers are no longer paying customers.
i have videos of myself pking with friends, i watch them everyday because it gives me a sense of nostalgia towards the game, there are more people for pking than against, so i dont understand what the problem is, you take this one thing away from us, and well take the one thing that holds your corporation together...DIVIDENDS...please bring it back!!!!!
The fact of the matter is, the only thing that jagex care about at all is money, and not beind sued. the only reason that they banished PKing is because of RWT (Real world trading). The RWT's were using fraudulent credit cards to pay for subscriptions, which resulted in law suits against jagex. which forced them to change the game for the worse. They were better off removing the game altogether. PKing was one of runescapes biggest attractions. we were pissed when they took that from us, THEN to make matters worse they introduced the 3k max trade limit. which was the worst update in game history. This caused me to end my membership, after 3 years of playing loyally. Jagex do not care for its customers, if they did they would have created another solution. but i agree, that was an UPDATE TOO FAR.
