Nintendo has sold 9.02m consoles globally, says Nikkei
According to a report by Japanese economics resource Nikkei Net Kansai, the Wii has overtaken the Xbox 360 as the current leader of the next-generation console war – the first time Nintendo has reclaimed the title since the SNES days.
Taking together the figures from Enterbrain, NPD and GfK, the Wii has sold 9.02m units throughout the three territories as of the end of July (August for Enterbrain’s figures), eclipsing Microsoft’s global sales of 8.8m despite being launched a year later.
Sony’s PS3, launched in the US and Japan within a few days of the Wii, has only sold 3.7m in the same timeframe.
Nikkei Net Kansai’s report claims that two-thirds of 360 sales have been in the US, with the Japanese performance still failing to meet expectation. In contrast, the Wii has sold almost uniformly across the territories, despite lacking the technical clout of the cutting-edge PS3 and Xbox 360.
This is correct. The article you mention would refer to the number of units sold into retail, not to consumers. I presume, anyway - Microsoft doesn't usually report how many machines are owned by consumers.
poor MS and x360
Does it matter, we live in an age of fanastic games and machines, i own a PS3 but have nothing against 360's or Wii's, all the consoles on the market have their own strengths and weaknesses. The fact we have a choice between three fantastic machines is something im grateful for, we all should be. This much competition between the consoles will make developers work harder and produce better games, be thankful, not spiteful.
Sorry for resubmitting the same comment, that was not what I expected from hitting f5 :)
Anyways, thanks for clearing those numbers up for me. And yes, thedude4000, it does matter to me. Not because I favor Xbox360 over Wii, but rather because I'm currently starting up my own game development studio and have to rely on articles like this for market analysis. But I do see your point, and I agree that the way the console market looks today is good for both consumers and developers.
