Concept Art Director - Guildford, UK

Are you a Concept Artist at the top of your game, looking to embrace a new role at a world leading studio? You'll be spending your days visualising environments, characters, vehicles, colour schemes - taking control of the overall mood and feel of awesome games. You'll be engrossed in creating rough sketches and happy to talk about the ideas in them, developing them into industry leading final illustrations given the time.

The images you create would inspire the team and help them to visualize ideas.  You will also work closely with your team and provide direction, feedback and mentorship where applicable towards increasing quality and efficiency of studio concept art creation.

You'll be looking at a salary of up to £70,000, and heading into a gorgeous office in the heart of Guildford just a five minute walk from the station. When you get there you'll be greeted by your studio's very own barista, how cool is that? There's also an on site gym, game areas, monthly socials and two parties every year!

A Concept Art Director will need:

  • Strong ability to be able to produce a broad spectrum of concept work needed in a studio, everything from quick thumbnails through to final illustrations and renders.
  • Strong Industry leading understanding of color theory, value structure, and lighting fundamentals with an application to both character and environment concept art.
  • Be as comfortable creating characters as they are painting environments.
  • Collaborate with Art Directors, Production Teams, Concept Artists and Content Leads.
  • Must have a passion for videogames.

A Concept Art Directors portfolio should demonstrate the following:

  • Strong traditional art skills
  • Ideally two shipped AAA titles as a Lead Concept Artist
  • Thumbnails and finished illustrations
  • A Strong understanding of industrial design describing function and form
  • A strong eye for composition
  • A strong ability to think in three dimensions
  • Great use of color, light and shadow
  • A breadth of creative styles
  • A broad interest in aspects of visual art outside of video and computer games
  • A good grasp of concept development and design
  • Great communication skills, a drive to improve everything and a motivation to make a difference is essential.
