The Dare to be Digital 2014 team talks to Develop about working on their entry title Seek

Dare Blogs: Five Pixels’ exploration and discovery game for tablets

What’s your game?
Seek is an exploration and discovery themed game based on the children’s game of Hide and Seek. Five children are playing on an island, and each child perceives the world through a (single) different sense. Senses include sight, hearing and smell, with two other less well known senses included.

The ability of each child is useful in certain situations, but limited in others, necessitating the player make use of all the children while searching for remaining friends. Seek is made in Unreal Engine 4 for Android tablets and although is playable by any age, is targeted at children aged 11+.

What has the Dare experience been like?
Dare has been fun and a very rewarding experience. Our team has had the opportunity to work full-time as a game development team as well as meeting other teams from around the world.

What have you learned from Dare?
Working on a larger project during Dare meant that we all learned a lot about the work process needed for full-time development. Working to a set deadline and utilising the teams skills correctly has been important in the success of the project.

Working with the new game engine Unreal 4, as well as other software on mobile platforms, meant we broadened our technical skills as well.

Are you looking forward to ProtoPlay?
We are excited to show of our game that we have been working hard on for the past eight weeks and are looking forward to letting the public and other teams enjoy our game.

What are your ambitions after Dare?
Our team has recently finished our third year at Abertay University; we aim to finish our fourth year, which will hopefully lead to work in larger teams or companies. If we get the chance to continue Seek, we would not pass up the chance to work on it after our fourth year, or as part of the Abertay Game Development Society.

Follow Five Pixels on Twitter and Facebook to learn more about their game.

Dare ProtoPlay and Indie Fest is on 7th-10th August in Dundee’s Caird Hall and City Square, with all 15 Dare student games on show, as well as over 30 indie games. http://www.dareprotoplay.com/
