We talk to the version management software outfit ahead of this year's big night
In our latest Develop Awards partner spotlight we speak to Perforce Software about the company, its work and its message to this year's finalists.
Perforce Software has signed up to support this year's Develop Awards as Gold Partner. The event will take place on July 10th.
Company/organisation name: Perforce Software
Year founded: 1997
Telephone: 0845 3450116
Could you introduce your company to our readers who might not know your role or goals?
Perforce is all about helping software developers, IT professionals and business users make the most of version management as a means to get their products and services to market more quickly.
Putting that into context, for games studios that has more traditionally been known as source code management or control to the engineers, but increasingly, we’re seeing games studios use it to manage all kinds of assets, including graphics, video, audio and marketing documents.
We’re used by 18 of the world’s top 20 games studios, but we’re also widely used by much smaller games studios. We have a ‘20/20’ entry-level business model, which provides up to 20 seats or licences for free, for the full product, for ever. Worldwide, we have over 400,000 customers in over 5,500 organisations.
The company is headquartered in California, but since the early days we’ve had a strong presence in the UK, which is also our EMEA HQ.
What distinguishes your company from similar outfits? In other words, what’s unique about your organisation?
We’re different in several ways. First, we’re a very well established organisation with considerable resources, so we’re constantly pushing new boundaries in what’s possible and offering our customers ‘cutting edge’ advances in version management.
But we’re not some huge monolithic organisation that doesn’t talk to its customers. We have daily dialogue with our users via social media and our own online community, as well as regular events. Our recent MERGE World Tour, across 4 cities in Europe, is one such example, plus of course being at industry events like Develop. Much of what you see in our new product releases has been driven by very specific customer requests.
What excites and/or encourages you about the games industry today?
The UK continues to be one of Europe’s leaders for games and is a real growth business for UK PLC. While there huge challenges in bringing games to market and then making real money out of them, we’re excited to see the huge potential that the new gaming platforms are bringing, enabling young developers to launch their own games, while also creating new business opportunities for larger, more established games studios. It’s a great time to be working with this community.
Looking at the Develop Awards finalists, what does it say to you about today’s games industry?
What’s great to see is what a wide variety of companies have made it to the finals, ranging from established studios, such as Rebellion, Crytek, Epic Games and Jagex through to new kid on the block, 22Cans. All are Perforce users, we might add! We’re also rather chuffed that Perforce is a finalist in the tools category.
Do you have a message for the Develop Awards finalists?
It’s a cliché, but you’re all winners, just by making it to this shortlist in what is a highly competitive and hugely innovative market.
Was there anything else you wanted to say about your company or the Develop Awards?
It’s great to be part of the Develop Awards and the conference, which are among the top highlights in the UK games industry.
The Develop Awards will take place on July 10th at the Hilton Metropole Hotel in Brighton.
